2013 IACP ~ International Association of Culinary Professionals Annual Conference

IACP logoThe 2013 International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) annual conference is April 6 – 9* at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, 5 Embarcadero Center.

Why am I publishing this? Because I produce Camp Blogaway, and I do my darndest to not conflict dates with other events.  IACP is important to ME.

Note that IACP is NOT a “blogger conference.”  It isn’t open to general attendance like the Fancy Food Show or BlogHerFood.  IACP is a member organization, a professional association for culinary careerists, people who make their living working in food. Bloggers are welcome to attend conference; if you qualify, you can join the association.

Attending conference, from my experience, is a building block in a long-term food career. I’ve attended every year since 1987 with exception of one – Chicago conference happened just as I was hitting Chicago every few months for business and was burned out on that happenin’ town.

IACP members DO have blogs, most (but not all) as a piece of their overall culinary pie: book authors, food stylists, journalists, freelance writers, cooking school teachers, chefs, caterers, restaurateurs, marketers, publicists, appliance manufacturers.  If you make your living in FOOD, definitely check into it.

Ask me anything about the association; I will give you my honest opinion.  I’m a Seasoned Member (as in, OLD), an Award of Excellence honoree as well as an IACP Cookbook Awards judge.  I even hold a Susan Lucci Record for having run for the board the MOST TIMES and never won (three).  Email: Patti {at} londre.com or leave a comment.

Yay, thanks, Patti, for this encouragement to attend the IACP conference and to learn more about the organization. Let me update the dates, however. The 2013 conference is in San Francisco April 6 thru 9. As you point out, the first day is for special tours and visits to great food venues in the Bay Area; actual sessions begin on Sunday April 7. Awards Gala is Tuesday April 9.

People should feel free to contact me, as well, about conference or membership issues: martha@iacp.com. We’re accepting proposal ides for conference now, too — deadline September 17.

Thanks so much for the heads up. I sadly missed the conference this year, and now look forward to the next!

Kelly, any first time at a professional conference is intimidating, just introduce yourself to everyone. Bring tons of business cards. Attend every meal, every reception. Don’t ditch. You’ll be great. I’ll be at IACPNYC, so look for me there. Going solo is great, that keeps you from sticking with your own people. Once you get back home, email each person you exchanged cards with. Stay connected during the year and see them again next year. Some of my dearest pals are via IACP.

I’m definitely excited to learn more about the IACP. I’m going for the first time this year since my day job is in marketing at an agency for a big food company. I’m intimidated and excited at the same time. It’s my first time going to a conference completely solo so I’m just hoping it is a welcoming bunch. 🙂
