Fresh Homemade Applesauce in the Crockpot

Crockpot applesauce heart casseroleI recently learned that it’s perfectly OK to re-do a recipe post as long as you keep the original title and the post date. That keeps you from erasing the post’s history, but lets you actually rewrite history! This was one of my very first, and the writing was crappy, at best.  My original photo was also crappy, I hadn’t yet understood the MACRO setting on the camera.  Today I made a batch of my Now Famous Homemade Applesauce. Niece Danielle gave me this as my Thanksgiving assignment for her potluck. I love the stuff, happy to oblige.

MY ORIGINAL POST:  Larry likes applesauce.  He eats fruit at every breakfast, but not apples.  Lunch or snack is apple time. Making applesauce in the crockpot resulted in an afternoon heady with the aroma of hot cinnamon and applies.  Next morning, he ate the batch with toast and cottage cheese, but did not comment.  So, I knew it wasn’t spectacular. “Too tart?” Uh, yeah. JUICY old lemon. I adjusted the recipe.  My sister Gretchen says it is still tangy but likes it that way.

Fresh Homemade Applesauce in the Crockpot

  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 1 small lemon
  • 2 Tbsp. water
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar

Peel, core and slice apples into one-inch chunks.  Place all ingredients into Crockpot and cook on HIGH for 2 hours.  Apples will become extremely soft; just stir until desired consistency.  Eat warm or refrigerate.  Makes 1 1/2 cups applesauce.

Great endorsement. Once you try homemade (and how simple it is), buying a jar of applesauce is almost a sin.

Stephanie, it’s the best, agreed. Stuff a gazillion apples into that crockpot and it still works perfectly.

Great recipe, I followed your instructions and made the most incredible applesauce of my life. My niece, especially, was awe struck.
