Sue, I saw that show, too. It was excellent. The food in Cuba was modest. They don't have all the ingredients or resources we have here. And, in fact, nowhere did we see what Americans would call a Cuban Sandwich.

I watched a show on the Travel Channel about Cuba and all the old cars. I was in awe. I would have loved to been there. Shows you anybody can make due without the modern conveniences we so have here in the U.S.
We sure have it easy here in America. Wonder how we would fare if all these conveniences were taken away as they were in other Countries?
Sounds like a trip of a lifetime. I'm sure the food was just as memorable.

Is it really easy? I've always wanted to make tamales, but I've always heard about how hard it is, I have this really great shredded beef filling, and I'd rather avoid tamale pie. Never had much appeal to me.

So when are you two going to retire to Ojai? Sounds perfect for you and maybe you might even find a good location for Camp Blogaway! I am in need of a vacation (real one) this year, but since funds are still tight, a drive up to Ojai, then on to Santa Barbara, Cambria, Paso Robles, Cayucos and SLO might be just the ticket!

Patti - I'm so glad that Larry and you had a great time at Tamales class. I made even more tamales in the following days with the leftover prepared masa from Ramona's. These homemade tamales with Fresh Food in a Flash ingredients and San Angel Mole Sauce are better than anything I've eaten in a restaurant. Yum Yum! The cheese I used in class was a combination of freshly grated Cotija, Panela and Jack cheese.

Hi Kelly, so sorry for that experience. Kind of a dumb question from me... did you check the Best If Used By date on your cans? Old milk in a can is going to turn into Old Cooked Milk in a can. And just to confirm, it needs to be sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk. Just a thought. The photo you see in my post is from that day's crockpot recipe.

So I've tried this in the slow cooker. On low for TEN hours and when I let it cool completely in the morning I opened the can to find an almost rotten runny smelly condensed milk. I then proceded to spend the day with another brand on the stovetop with continually boiling water for six hours and the same thing. The water line covers the can at all times, too. SOOO frustrated!

Yes, I always count the silver. I learned that from my mom. And I still have all of the pieces of the 12 place settings that I inherited from her.

Don't you just love holidays full of family and friends? :)

I actually had tangerine upside down cake at "Diner" in Brooklyn and was inspired to make it. I used another recipe and put in lots of tangerine zest, but peeled the tangerines before slicing them and it turned out amazing.

What a rebel you are! First you use tangerines when clearly instructed to use lemons and then you present a fruit dish when you are told potatoes! I think I love you!! And funny you should talk about cooking mishaps...we've been having our fair share of them over at SaucyCooks. You can't win if you don't play and without experimentation we will never discover new delights! Cheers!

I loved your comments about the lack of home cooking and home ec. classes. I learned to cook when I was in the Bluebirds, took a home ec. class and was fortunate enough to have adults who loved to cook around me.
Your "Whatever Baked Omelete" sounds like something I tried the other night when I felt I didn't have anything to cook at home. I used eggs, egg whites, cheddar cheese, onions, garlic and potatoes. I started it on the stovetop until the eggs seemed set, then I put panko bread crumbs on top and plunked it in a 400 degree over for seven to ten minutes. It was great.

Pere Lachaise is definitely worth the trip to visit in Paris. Jim and I went there on a previous Paris visit. The purpose wasn't to view Jim Morrison's grave (though we did), but to be shown the plot my brother-in-law's parents had bought.

The cemetery reminds me a lot of the ones in New Orleans, but with gentle hills.
