Road Trip! U-Pick Strawberries in Carlsbad

childOur home in Westwood is at the north-west end of LA.  Cousins Nancy and John graciously hosted a family potluck at their home in Del Mar (North San Diego). That’s about a 2+hour drive IF no traffic. But since there ALWAYS IS traffic, we brought a big ice chest to keep our dishes cold. The traffic clipped along well enough that when we hit Carlsbad, we had time to take a 15 minute detour for U-Pick Strawberries.

Then, the mother lode chilled in the trunk of our car throughout the day while we potlucked with cousins.  Any road trip to San Diego, bring an ice chest just in case.

When you have barrels of berries, you’re invited to return to this blog for inspiration: my two top suggestions are  Strawberry Sour Cream Pie (which was featured on KCRW Radio’s Pie A Day Blog) and Peppered Strawberries in Balsamic Vinegar.

  • Carlsbad U-Pick Strawberry Fields
  • Daylight hours
  • Cannon Road Exit off the 5 Freeway, go east. It’s right there.
  • BONUS: right next door is the Carlsbad Outlet Mall, excellent chains like Crate & Barrel, Coach, Banana Republic, Cole Hahn, Gap.
  • BONUS #2: that mall has the BEST BATHROOMS ever.

Karen – what would be the right answer? I cannot think of different “kinds.” Anybody have input?

It looks like you got quite the bounty of berries there! I can’t wait to see what you make with them. The two recipes you listed both sound delicious!

What kind of strawberries did you pick?
