This morning it occurred to me… if I write THIS post during THIS week, it will be a convergence of two accomplishments: my 150th post on Worth The Whisk, now officially One Year Old. I was an adorable one-year-old if I do say so myself.
Here is how WTW happened…
I’ve been blogging since mid-2007 for my other avocation, putting on camps for grownups: here’s the blog for Camp GetAway for Mothers & Others.
Being familiar with blogging, I discuss it in my guerilla marketing speeches. One such speech was a year ago at the Denver IACP conference (“Online Marketing for the Internet Impaired” was my official topic). It was there that I decided to sit in on a session about food blogging, thinking I could add some recipes to the camp blog.
LIGHTBULB. “Gee, Patti, after all these decades of working in the food world, writing about food, possessing a home ec degree and certainly cooking food, why not start a blog for the fun of it?”
That is not the truth. The truth is, when one of the speakers said, “You cannot NOT make money with a food blog,” the entire audience sat up STRAIGHT in our chairs, note-taking a lot more furiously. The next speaker gave her stats: traffic, CPM, advertising networks and you could see the mental calculators. Me, especially.
Well, that was a bunch of hooey. Too complicated to even bore you with the pennies and traffic building ridiculousness. But after landing on a fun blog name, and starting the process, I was hooked, this is fun, I am stretching, and we’re eating more interesting things here.
You will see there are no ads on this blog. HOWEVER, I am a businesswoman, so after about six months of trying to figure this all out (here comes the shameless plug), LIGHTBULB: put on an educational camp for food bloggers, with experts teaching blog-specific skills, great food, excellent sponsors, hands-on workshops, killer goodie bag, and a ton of fun. That IACP speaker may have been right all along – Camp Blogaway Bootcamp for Food and Recipe Bloggers will probably make a little bit of money.
Happy Blogiversary to Worth The Whisk!
–> Today is also the day to announce our FREE BUNKS FOR MILITARY program at Camp Blogaway, a tradition we love at our Camp GetAway weekends, too. So if you know a food blogger who is “military,” point him or her to this link: Camp Blogaway Military.
