Roadkill Cake

Roadkill-CakeIn the spirit of a kicking off your fun, long holiday weekend, I present this ROADKILL CAKE.  No, I didn’t make this, it was Adriana Shoning’s blue ribbon winner in the Ugly Cake Contest at the Iowa State Fair, a competition for teens.  Animal lovers like me needn’t stew…  better this happened to a cake (happily still edible) than a real critter.  And what a smart strategy for keeping a teen busy – encourage yours to get in the kitchen and bake up something ugly for July 4th festivities. Hey, any idea what native Iowan species this might be?

Hey Patti,

I lived in Iowa for a few years, as you know, and went to their fair, but as a native Minnesotan I have to tell you, it’s the Minnesota State Fair that tops all! From the deep fried cheese curds to all manner of buttery, sugary, roasted delights you can’t beat it. Not to mention the top flight entertainers, car racers, and amazing midway full of strange creatures and rides. Put that on your bucket list, it’s definitely worth the trip. For two weeks in August; ends on Labor Day weekend.

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Iowa and road kill is everywhere. So leave it to the creative Iowans to incorporate it into their culinary world.

Deer is the most common road kill, but from the looks of the nose and possible long ears on that cake, my best guess is rabbit.
